Aalt is a real gentleman known by the grandchildren as Opa (Dutch for grandfather) or by the team at Verkerks, 'Boss'.
Aalt is the founder of A. Verkerk Ltd (hence the 'A'), and he still projects a charisma that flows throughout the company, charming everyone he deals with.  About fifty years ago Aalt left Holland, where he was a Master butcher in Amsterdam.  It only took Aalt five years in this new country to set up his own business, which has continued to grow ever since, from 20 pounds of salami a week to approximately the ten ton per week we produce today.  Even now at 84 years old, you can still find him daily out the back of the Armagh Street store doing what he does best - creating the best cuts of meat for his customers. more>>
